Me and a Tree Festive Holiday Markets You Don't Want to Miss!

What are you doing for the holidays? Holiday Market is upon us! Have you heard? This will be a very big artisan made farmers market and the one thing I absolutely adore about Chattanooga Holiday Market is that it's not a market that just any o'l maker can get into.  The hand selected vendors have to be top notch and you can be sure the festivities will match the talents from music to food!

Have you always wanted to grow some medicinal or cooking herbs or maybe even grow your own food but don't know where to start? Maybe you don't havea green thumb, space, or a backyard but would love to have some fresh herbs for your kitchen and meals? Well you can become a green thumb with a few simple tips and planning! Let's get started! I love growing my own medicinal Herbs. I had so much fun growing beautiful purple Lavender for the first time this past Spring. The bees loved visiting my garden and my tomatoes, basil, sage, lavage, evening primrose, did great! I also had a wonderful bounty of cooking and medicinal herbs such as lemon balm, mint, rosemary, Cuban Oregano,...

The Power of a Morning Ritual

Do your thoughts serve you and others or do they steal your energy? Here's some tips to gaining control of your imagination and life... What image comes to mind when you hear the word "ritual?" It may be different depending on your background. For me, it's something meaningful that I do to keep myself aligned with my best version of myself. For some, it's a spiritual experience. For others, it's simply a time to be still and hear yourself think. For me, it's a little bit of both.   I'M AWAKE NOW WHAT?When you get up in the morning- you have a few choices. You can have a plan or aimlessly wander around until you "feel inspired," but that rarely produces...

Covid & Vitamin D

I have been enjoying these lectures of Professor and Pulmonary Critical Care & Sleep Expert from Loma Linda University, Dr. Roger Seheult  In this episode he discusses the benefit of Vitamin D and its role in protecting the cells from Corona Virus (spike proteins). I like the idea of putting the control back in the hands of the average American.  In the video below Dr Seheult shares real peer reviewed studies. I believe he is giving us all a public service health announcement that can save your life. I combine this information with studies on the role sugar plays on the cells and spike proteins. In a nut shell, sugar directly competes with Vitamin C.  Enjoy a user friendly version of the medical science between...

Outdoor Summer Protection for You & Your family

Being protected from the outdoor elements is vitally important for healthy skin and staying free from certain viruses like Zika, Dengue, and a few other mosquito-born diseases. Here's how I do it safely and thoroughly. It's getting very close to SUMMER! Gardening is one of many forms of summer meditating. It's centering and calming and greatly improves the mind. I have been working on both my container garden as well as planting a few trees with my husband up at our property. We are so grateful. I am thrilled to be able to see people and get back to enjoying socializing. I've been enjoying as much outdoor time as time allows. It's just starting to get a little more "buggy". Being protected from the outdoor elements is vitally...

SUMMER IS HERE YET AGAIN!

I am so excited to be able to scuba dive in warm waters again. I also need to step up my game with making sunscreen because we have been getting more requests as the heat comes on! A comment by a customer was shared with me over the weekend about how well our sunscreen stays on even when you sweat. I agree. I am very active from running to swimming, and I wear my sunscreen as well. Although I always tell people that ALL SUNSCREENS need to be applied when you are coming into contact with water (or sweat) - it's true that ours stay on better than many due to the oils we add.

Mental Health & Getting Outdoors

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and I have a few things I'd like to share with you that I have been doing to stay positive and anxiety free. Take a look at these great pictures from my forest bathing day outdoors!  Today, I chose to do a little nature bathing while writing in a new location. Do you like my new natural office? I sure do! It's 7 a.m. The weather is about 73 degrees outside and feels comfortable in the shade. The bullfrogs and birds are very active and I'm convinced that this forest & river is the perfect place to catch up on work. It sure doesn't feel like work when I'm outdoors! Plus, I think it makes for a much...

WHY I ADORE CARROT SEED OIL FOR AGE SPOTS & SUN CARE (antioxidants)

Published medical research on the advantages of carrot seed oil and it's anti tumor activities (inhibits skin cancer). The other day I was writing a blog post about the power of using zinc sunscreens to stave off skin cancer and brown spots caused by the sun repeatedly hitting our skin during our short car rides to the store, gym, work, etc- adding up to regular exposure over and over creating unwanted dark spots on our chest arms and face. You can read more about that here.   In this edition of my blog, I want to share with you why I adore carrot seed oil to prevent skin damage and dark spots in the first place while sharing some medical research so you will appreciate and understand why I...

How To Avoid & Get Rid of Age Spots Summer Protection and Beyond (Antioxidants)

When we are in our twenties we rarely think of taking care of our skin the way we do in our late thirties, forties and beyond. If you are in your twenties start protecting your skin using reef safe sunscreen now. Don’t wait for sunspots to show up because that means you will be more prone to them as you age. As we age we are bombarded with free radicals that cause cellular damage and breakdown.   Using a fortifying natural plant based replenisher helps combat free radical damage by providing your skin and body with nutrient rich plants and botanicals which are high in antioxidants- and that's a good thing for you skin, body, and health. It wasn’t until...

Elderberry Syrup Proven Cold & Influenza Remedy (Easy Recipe)

Did you know that Elderberry is one of the most common medicinal plants in the world? Elderberries can be traced back to Rome, Greece, and Egypt for its many healing properties. Elderberry has quite a bit of promising science behind it. While the medical community can't fully understand the complexity of all the plant's properties they admit that it's helping with viruses and is something to take a closer look at because people are not happy with drugs and the unwanted detrimental side effects drugs have in attempting to combat upper respiratory problems caused by a virus.   Here's a study that shows how Elderberry effectively treated upper respiratory symptoms. Here's a direct quote from the study:“The quantitative synthesis of the effects yielded a large mean...

Beginners Guide to Conquering Anxiety & Depression Through Gardening

It's Spring! Flowers and trees are starting to show blooms, and the birds are singing more and more each day! After what the world has been through this last year, I have a heightened appreciation for plants and nature. A lot of people are struggling with depression and anxiety right now from the state of the world and news and I admit that I too had to refocus quite a bit. Gardening and watching buds bloom helped my mental state a lot during the pandemic shutdowns. I had a container garden, and I grew many things that were edible and beautiful to look at, and that helped balance out the world of negativity. Having herbs during the pandemic helped me feel safe...

WHATS IN MY PLANTS (WILDCRAFTED VS: ORGANIC)

What's in my plants? More importantly what's in the dirt?  FACTORY ORGANIC FARMING IS BIG BUSINESS (and why I use wildcrafted) Organics have turned into a big business in the last ten to twenty years, and like all corporate business with more crops comes a lot more money- and with more money, arises the need to protect their assets and with the protection of assets come the use of more pesticides/herbicides. That's the way factory farming of ANY kind works. Supply and demand. Welcome to the big world of factory farming. So why buy factory organic? Well, many of us feel we want "the best" and organics promises that, with convenience right? Conventional factory farming use too many harmful chemicals, and we certainly...

The Beauty of Lemongrass

The making of my artisan lemongrass essential oil and clay soap is always a delight and an accomplishment for me. Essential oil blending is not as easy at it may sound. Although I enjoy many phthalate free scents, my true love is blending essential oils. I look forward to my ever growing essential oil spa-bar line. Essential oil bars work best on my skin and most everyone else's too. That's why we create so many varieties, because everyone likes something a little different. We have something for everyone. Over the years we have had requests for lemongrass and citrus scented soap bars but have found those particular oils a bit more challenging work with. For example; essentials oils don't smell as you would expect them to straight out of the bottle (as opposite of...

3 Tips To Identifying What May Be Causing Your Skin Problems Ingredient Do's & Don'ts

One of the most frequent questions I get asked as a skin care maker is, "will this face or body cream make my skin break out?" I can't even count the number of times people ask me for help with their skin troubles from dealing with break outs from their "dermatologists recommended" cream to more serious issues. They often complain about a rash or overly dry skin (which leads to premature aging) from the prescription. They are usually frustrated and want something that works. They don't want the "solution" from the dermatologist that failed to solve their skin problem. Can you relate? So, how do you know if the skin care cream you are buying will moisturize your skin or cause breakouts...

The Monoi Oil Has Superpowers: Here's What You Need to Know

Ever wondered where the extraordinary flower scent comes from? The empowering smell has a name—Monoi. The word Monoi actually means “sacred oil”, essentially created from soaking the petals of Tahitian Gardenias, also known as Tiaré flowers in coconut oil. Its sweet and exquisite smell has been adored by the entire world, and for good reason.  So what makes Monoi so particular?   Intense Hydration  The Monoi is a calming and protective oil that hydrates the skin without damaging or stripping its natural oils. Interestingly, tribes in the South Pacific have used Monoi to protect their skin from harsh weather conditions such as strong winds and intense tropical sun.  As Monoi oil is interlaced with coconut oil, which is a natural and deep...

Calcium and Heart Health

Regarding calcium, your bones, heart health, and supplementation.  Calcium is very important and something a lot of people are low in especially women. It takes years to begin showing signs of osteopenia (translucent bones- something I had when eating meat). Recommended daily needs if you're under forty years old is 1000 mg daily and over forty is 1200 mg daily.  Regarding supplementation - it's best to find Calcium citrate as opposed to the other forms of calcium (Calcium carbonate) on the market. You don't want the one from rocks. Calcium Carbonate is from rocks and causes problems (and has been linked to heart attacks and strokes). Check your labels. Calcium citrate is food based and has a better absorption rate...

Is Bar Soap Good For Your Face? Is Liquid Soap Better?

When I first started making my soaps, I wanted to make both liquid and bar soaps. I learned the correct chemistry and quickly realized that there is no competition between bar soap and liquid soap. I know how to make both. I choose to make old-fashioned artisan small batch bar soap because it's truly better for your skin all the way around -though more labor intensive and costly due to pure clays, tea infusions, pure essential oils etc.   Bar soap has a delicate balance of fats, oils, and plant herbs that help clean and shrink pores without damaging the skin by harsh over cleansing and without the health problems associated with harsh chemically laden liquid soap brands. Natural bar soaps that are made by hand in...

Herbal Salves That Help Burns & Bites

Can a simple salve or herb stop pain from a cut, burn, or bug bite on contact? Is there truly such a thing? Cuts burns and bites can cause skin infections if not treated properly. What can we do to stop that pain or prevent something even worse? I have been collecting and growing herbs and plants for a bit, and thankfully I had medicinal herbs in my garden. Yesterday, I wanted to see if I could melt a granulated sweetener (a type of natural sugar) into a liquid in my kitchen. I do not eat sugar and did not grow up with sugar or even stevia or any of that stuff. I was unfamiliar with its potential for severe...

The Mood Elevating Power of Lemon Myrtle & Lemongrass

One of those gifts is Lemon Myrtle backousia citradoria, and Lemongrass cymbopogen citratus, both used to repel bugs and also enjoyed as a beneficial healing plant. Both Lemongrass and Lemon Myrtle have Citral along with many other interesting chemical compounds, which give it the lovely lemony scent so often cherished by citrus lovers the world over.   Bugs do not appreciate i the scent of citral but we humans sure do! It works hard at repelling bugs from our skin! It's best used with other essential oils to...

SUN SPOTS & PHOTO AGING

Next time you drive, take notice of where the light cascades and start applying sunblock to those areas so you can avoid skin cancer, premature wrinkles, and brown age spots. The Magic Of Emulsion Creams. Here's How To Protect Your Skin.

Depending on where you live or travel when the weather drops, there's less moisture for your skin. When winter arrives, the cold air wicks water away from our skin and creates dry micro patches that can crack and wrinkle our skin more quickly. This makes the more delicate and sensitive area of our face look more crepey and aged. No one wants crepey looking chicken skin. In a nutshell, winter (as well as summer) dehydrates our skin (and lips). Summer sun can do as much damage as the winter cold. Weather deeply affects our skin and, you'll want to protect and hydrate your skin and lips no matter what time of year it is. Did you know that products that...
