Hiking Outdoors

It's that time of year again! Summer and outdoor excursions! You might be planning on taking the kids camping or going on that long-awaited vacation with your significant other or going on an exciting solo adventure to new and distant lands! Either way; it's great to be enjoying the experience out and about with your favorite humans or even for the first time on your own.

Being outdoors in nature is a great way to break up the daily grind. Being prepared ahead of time ensures a great time so that your plans aren't unexpectedly derailed. Sunburns can make sleeping in sheets rather painful, and chapped lips can knock your confidence down a few notches. Itchy bites from mosquitoes are no way to spend your days. So, whether you're trecking across the lands on a grand adventure like skiing, boating, or hiking or simply planning a local BBQ, swimming excursion, or chillin' out in the garden, be prepared to protect yourself ahead of time, and you will enjoy your great escapes both near and far!

Since 90% of skin cancer is caused by overexposure of UV rays to the skin, its wise to be prepared for outdoors with a natural plant-based as well as reef safe sunblock. Choose a good zinc block that also contains moisturizing oils such as Jojoba, Borage, Primrose, Aloe, Olive, and Grapeseed because those top tier oils give the skin vital nutrients without being overly heavy and greasy. Opt for an Eco-cert preservative as it's the only natural preservative allowed in organic skin care- because it's effective yet safe. Most companies have scented and unscented blocks to choose from and as long as the sunblocks don't contain oxybenzone, lavender and harsh preservatives they are usually safe for the coral reefs as well. Here's the one I like the best.

Pesky no see-ums and biting insects can be a killjoy to any planned party or outing, so packing some natural (again plant-based) insect repellant that uses pure essential oils as opposed to cancer-causing Deet and harsh chemicals is easy and smart. A reputable repellant can go a long way to keeping the peace at your outing and events! Plus it's safe for the whole family. Here's the one that we like best because it works!

Outdoor kits are a great way to "ensure " your plans for fun and adventure with family and friends stay that way- fun!. Convenient outdoor carry kits can easily be put together and kept in a glove compartment of a car, boat box, or conveniently stashed in a travel bag/purse. Outdoor essential can make all the difference in the world between having a great time and having a Debbie downer situation that can disrupt your peace of mind not to mention your own comfort and enjoyment.

I have a few kits I created for all of my outdoor occasions. I simply put them in a little zip lock bag or Tupperware box. You can get a more fancy bag or box, of course.  The important thing is to remember to keep multiples in different places so that you are stress-free and always ready for the occasion.

I keep lip balms and "before" and "after" sun creams with me at all times. I have one in my car, a few items such as sunscreen and lip balm in my purse, a few lip balms in my gym bag and another balm and block in my scuba gear. I like having "multiples" because it's easy to forget when changing bags/purses or gear. With multiples, you are always prepared.

Here are a few outdoor skin protection tips for you that you may find helpful.

1. Sunblock Non-Nano Particle Zinc Oxide. Avoid Oxybenzone and all other sun inhibitors/blocks and choose the all natural broad spectrum reliable Zinc Oxide. Zinc reflect and if it's non-nano will not get into your bloodstream the wat nanoparticles do. Much safer.  If you can get it with rich and nourishing botanical and oils added -even better. It's great to have after sun creams to keep the skin in great condition while promoting healing from overexposure of the elements as well.

I use the Summer Passion Sun Block from Me and a Tree. I use it on my face arms and body. The block mixes well with my makeup, and I know I can count on it for a full day of sun and fun. Another thing I like about zinc oxide is it doesn't burn my skin when I sweat. The other sunblocks burn my face a lot, especially if I sweat. Me and a Tree's Sunblocks are the first I have ever work that doesn't burn my face.

2. Lip balm - I can't live without them! Regular lipsticks can be very drying, and I like keeping my lips healthy looking and moisturized. Lip care is often forgotten about packing for the great outdoors. Both sun and wind can crack lips pretty quickly. The outdoor elements can stress overexposed skin and especially the delicate skin on and around the mouth. Keeping your lips moisturized and protected with a high-quality lip balm will help make those long hikes much more enjoyable. Go for the balms with added shea and more than a few oils. If a lip balm only has wax and only one or two oils meager cheap oils, it's not enough. Go for the coconut, sweet almond, avocado, and jojoba and shea combo. It might cost a little more, but it makes all the difference in the world. I keep one in my car, one in my purse, one in my gym bag and two for the boating and diving days- one on my actual diving BCD diving vest and one on the boat in case I lose it. Yes! I am that serious about lip and skin protection!

3.Bug Repellant - Need I say more? Biting insects can ruin an outdoor event quite fast! Truth be told today with all the weird stories about people getting deadly viruses from mosquito bites it's just prudent to have it in the car and camping gear at all times. Bring enough for others, so you have enough for yourself too. Me and a Tree has a great smelling Bug Off! specially formulated for couples and those spending a lot of time in close proximity. There's nothing more nauseating than citronella in abundance. It makes me feel ill. If you have that same feeling around it then Instead, try Me and a Tree's Bug Off! blend made with pure natural essential oils and it actually smells good!  Bug repellants are what I opt for before running, hiking, camping or going into the woods to nearby lakes.

So certainly get outdoors and soak up the scenery, but definitely, be prepared with the 3 essentials! Bug Off! Lip Balm and Sunscreen! A hat is a smart idea too! Enjoy your adventures and stay naturally beautiful...
